“Doctrine Divides!” and “No Creed But Christ!” are statements that we have heard for many years and, while sounding spiritual, have proven to be very detrimental to the Lord’s Church. The concern is legitimate, nobody should desire to bring division into the Lord’s Church.
The Apostle Paul said, “Now I urge you, brethren, keep our eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teachings which you learned, and turn away from them.” Rom. 16:17
Clearly the Apostle is for unity in the church, but not for a unity apart from doctrinal integrity. He is for a unity in the “Teachings which you learned.”
We believe that doctrine is important and is essential to the life and witness of the church. The imparting of doctrine is vital to the making of disciples. As Jesus Christ commanded, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you…” Matthew 28:19-20a.
To neglect sound doctrine, is to be like a boat that is not anchored, it is blown about by every latest craze, every new teaching, and ultimately leads to some form of idolatry which is always detrimental to the individual.
